The Fourways chapter of the Worthog Brewers home brewer club held their June meeting at Copperlake breweries. The topic of the day was yeast and specifically liquid yeast cultures.
Christopher Rothmann from LiquidCulture gave a talk on yeast and liquid yeast, covering a variety of topic including local yeast found only in South Africa. This talk was followed by a yeast taste test. A few weeks prior one batch of beer was brewed and split and fermented with 6 different strains of yeast. The results are amazing, the differences are quite profound. Some of the tastes however could have been contamination, as 3 of the samples had pronounced green apple or wine like flavours.
Some very interesting beers at the League tasting afterwards! Caramel popcorn Wee Heavy, a sour beer, rye beer and Whiskey barrel aged stout!
I now have a new pet project, as soon as it is a bit warmer! I am going to attempt this yeast test with as many available strains as I can get my hands on, hopefully 10 strains. And the researcher in me will make me do it at least 3 times!
